Alan Jones Associates is a Scottish based strategic community development consultancy specialising in strategic reviews, community engagement, feasibility studies, options appraisals, business planning and securing project funding.

With 25 years experience of local government and higher education sport, leisure and education services, and 22 years consultancy experience, the company offer innovative and creative solutions to all types of community related projects.

Alan Jones – Director

Alan was educated at the Universities of Glasgow and Stirling with a Batchelor of Education Degree in Physical Education and a Masters Degree in Education. For a further three years he taught physical recreation at Stirling University before becoming the first full-time Sports Officer for a District Sports Council in Scotland.

Alan was Director of Leisure and Recreation for Inverness District Council from 1987–1996, and Director of Cultural and Leisure Services for the Highland Council from 1996–2002. Alan is the past Chairman of the Scottish Association of Directors of Leisure Services,(now VOCALS) and is a former member of the Board of sportscotland.

With this background, Alan has expertise in all areas of strategic management, policy formation and performance management. He has experience in organisational development and change management, having successfully set up 3 new leisure departments. His services cover all aspects of cultural and leisure activities to best meet client’s needs.

Alan not only delivers strategic direction, but has also been singularly successful in attracting external funding. In recent years, he has secured in excess of £37 million for community capital and revenue projects.

John Humphries – Marketing & Business Management Associate

As a self-employed Marketing Graduate of Strathclyde Business School, having focused a significant proportion of his academic work on Place Marketing, Destination Branding, and Tourism Management. John is currently working as a locally based Associate with Alan Jones Associates on a variety of projects across a full spectrum of size and scale, and for a number of community development groups and trusts on a wide variety of project types throughout Scotland. John combines over 12 years’ experience in management with his formal education, bringing a wide range of appropriate experience and skills to any project He has experience in writing a number of business plans, feasibility studies and reports for a broad range of clients in the sports, leisure, wellbeing and community sectors. 

Through a variety of projects and application of his skills and experience, John has first-hand experience in various key aspects of business planning including SWOT analysis, financial forecasting and modelling, market gap analysis and micro and macro environment assessment, and brings a specific interest in understanding and supporting the development of projects to ensure the financial viability of a “vision”.

John brings 13 years retail and service management experience, as well as the skills gained through a variety of voluntary board positions within the community, youth, and sport sector in Inverness and across the Highlands.  John has strong business acumen with experience in reality checking and developing realistic and robust business plans and financial projections for facilities such as Rothienorman Village Hall, John O’Groats Mill Trust, The North Kessock Ticket Office Project, and Kinlochbervie Community Bunkhouse.
